Renderman SCITECH Finalist

For this piece, I participated in Renderman's Scitech Challenge and ended up as one of the finalists. It was a huge experience learning how to do a full CG environment and composite it over.

If you want to see the rest of the finalists and winners, here is the link.

Renderman Challenge

This was a fun project because I was applying everything I was learning about modeling, texturing in substance, compositing, trying renderman and using ACES for the first time while going on school and this was the final product

My first step after scrapping a whole idea of nuclear fusion was to show a robot to learn about its origins in computer graphics, like a kid watching an old VCR of their parents.

Then I moved on to modeling the robot and building the enviroment.

While modeling the character, I used my skills in Substance Painter as I was learning the software in school to create this character sitting down rusted. My inspiration really came from when WALL-E was watching HELLO Dolly!

The first challenge was that once handed the CG files to my previous compositor it was handed without any light, shadow or general passes to color correct the snow.

This gave us less flexibility to color correct and use similar techniques as the water shot. I planned my elements with masks and keyers to select specific areas to color correct.

In compositing, it was my first time using a multipass composite to bring the colors, highlights, add the clouds, and add the screen pixels and bloom to the shot.

It was a lot of fun figuring out how this piece push me out of my comfort zone in such little time.

This is the shot before compositing, adding the lights from the screen, and textures. Luckily, my friends gave me great advice and I was able to deliver the final piece on time.

Here is the final render.
